1.1. The Recreational UAS Safety Test (TRUST)

2. Flying Commercially

2.1. FAA Part 107

  • Part 107 license: provides formal training and a certificate in the safe and legal operation of drones, for various fields like real estate, agriculture, and film.

    Even pro bono drone footage requires this license!
  • Training: Complete the free online training course titled Part 107 Small UAS Recurrent (course ID ALC-677).

  • Test: This is a 60 question test.
    Pass the open-book test with at least a 70% score.

    Test subjects
    • Applicable regulations relating to small unmanned aircraft system rating privileges, limitations, and flight operation

    • Airspace classification and operating requirements, and flight restrictions affecting small unmanned aircraft operation

    • Aviation weather sources and effects of weather on small unmanned aircraft performance

    • Small unmanned aircraft loading and performance

    • Emergency procedures

    • Crew resource management

    • Radio communication procedures

    • Determining the performance of small unmanned aircraft

    • Physiological effects of drugs and alcohol

    • Aeronautical decision-making and judgment

    • Airport operations

    • Maintenance and pre-flight inspection procedures

  • Print your certificate: Always carry your certificate (or a digital copy) and a photo ID when you fly.

  • Expiration: the FAA Part 107 remote pilot certificate does not expire, but you must maintain your aeronautical knowledge recency by completing a free online recurrent training course every 24 calendar months to remain legal to fly under Part 107 rules. If your recency expires, you are grounded until you complete the online course.
