1. macOS Montery

  1. Download

    1. Download via this link.

    2. Do not click install after the download!

    3. Confirm the Install macOS Monterey app in your Applications folder.

  2. Format a USB stick

    1. Plug in a USB stick

    2. Launch the Disk Utility

    3. Click on the USB stick

    4. Click Erase

    5. Choose Mac OS Extended (Journaled) as the Format.

    6. Give it a name of macOS-Restore

      If you want a name other than macOS-Restore, then you’ll need to use that name during the create install media step.
    7. Now click Erase

    8. Click Done

  3. Create install media

    1. Plug in the USB stick that was prepped in a previous step.

    2. Open Terminal

    3. run the following - this will take a couple of minutes:

      sudo /Applications/Install\ macOS\ Monterey.app/Contents/Resources/createinstallmedia --volume /Volumes/macOS-Restore
  4. Boot from Media

    1. Stick the media in the Mac

    2. Power up the Mac while holding down the Option/Alt key

    3. The Mac will boot up with the Startup Manager

    4. Select the USB drive and the Mac will start up in Recovery Mode.
